I’m unemployed, but I have $30K in savings…how can I use this money to turn my life around?
I need some genuine help. I am 28 y/o, unemployed, and living at home with my parents. I have a 4-year degree, which I completed back in 2002; I majored in chemistry. After graduation I was unable to find a “good” job….so I found a job as an insurance claims rep making only $24K a year. The job was dead-end with no career advancement opportunities, and the work was dreadfully dull, so I quit. I always look online and in the paper for job openings, but it seems I am not qualified for anything other than bullsh!t customer service jobs.
What can I do with $30K to turn my life around? Day trade? Start a business? If so, what kind of business? What would you do with $30K?
GET YOUR MBA. You are the exact target age they are looking for, you have now strings with a job, you dont have a mortgage AND you have money saved up. You are in a very good position…but the window starts closing with every year you get older. Business school is designed for “career changers”…there is a career for you and you probably dont even know it exists…thats where b-school will come in (plus its fun as hell since networking (socializing) is a main emphasis) First round admissions begin in October but you’ll be able to make 2nd round in January (if you kick ass right now)
So you need to take the following steps:
1) Take the GMAT: its the standardized admissions test. I have taken all the courses and they are all BS. You have money saved so hire a 1 on 1 tutor (from craigslist) and tell them your time frame. Also manhattan gmat has some very good books, kaplan and princeton review have good online courses as well(for not too much $) You will need to score over a 700 to be competitive. Check out beatthegmat dot com and gmatclub dot com. (gmat mba community sites)
2) Get your resume together and muster up some community, social, volunteer work (if possible)
3) Get references from your old bosses, you’ll need two (see each individual application)
4) Look into hiring a consultant to help you in your applications…look on craigslist…you can find some goos ones for $50 to $100 per hour…you may only need a few hours with them.
good luck
oh and DONT EVEN think about doing MLM, daytrading(even though I am a daytrader) or some other fly by night get rich quick BS. If you want to keep and accumulate money you need to do what others will not (spend two years getting your MBA) The MBA and Masters is the new Bachelors. With out them , in the future, you’ll still be able to get jobs…just jobs that suck.
