How do I know if someone is legally divorced?

Long story short my new boyfriend told me he has been divorced twice and really doesn’t like to talk about it. Im curious to see if the divorces were finished and what not but I dont want to make a big deal about it by asking him, I dont want to offend him. I found one marriage record and no divorce record on the states online archives, but i’m not sure how to search the divorce records. How can I be sure he is really 100% divorced? He said that he has been divorced under a year so I just really need to be sure about it. I dont want to ask him because I dont want him to think I dont believe him. I just have been burned in the past so I am extra cautious. I dont want to spend any money searching online either so it has to be a free site. Please test it before answering because many say they are free but they are not!
